Why This Is Important

The economic Recovery Act made changes in the Child Tax Credit that will put money into the pockets of very low-wage families. But these changes will expire at the end of the year unless Congress extends them.

Millions of low-income working families could lose refunds that help them meet basic needs. An estimated 600,000 children will fall into poverty. Meanwhile, children in households with incomes over $100,000 will still benefit from the full credit.

President Obama has proposed making the current Child Tax Credit permanent. But Congress may ignore this proposal when it extends other tax credits that benefit the middle class.

Tell your representatives in Congress that you want them to make the current version of the Child Tax Credit permanent.

Preserve the Current Child Tax Credit

Dear Members of Congress:

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act has enabled millions of low-income working families to benefit from the Child Tax Credit. Others who were eligible before can claim larger credits. The credits, though not large, make a big difference to families who have a hard time meeting basic needs.

The current Child Tax Credit is good public policy. It promotes and rewards work, reduces pressures on safety net programs and puts money into our still-struggling economy.

Please make the ARRA version of the Child Tax Credit permanent when you vote on other expiring individual tax credits.

Thank you for your commitment to American families.
