Tell Congress and the President that the Time to End Nuclear Power in the US is Now

The Issue

Currently in Japan we are seeing one of the biggest nuclear disaster's in the world unfold, and certainly the largest in my lifetime to date.  Many plants in the United States cannot withstand a serious natural disaster and with safer solutions available like wind power, solar power and increasing access to public transportation and educating people on how to cut down their own energy consumption, we can do better than nuclear power.

We are told our nuclear plants are safe, but considering 104 nuclear reactors in the US are built close to fault lines, how safe can that be? http://www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-and-stories/2011-03-16/nuclear-power-plants-ranking-americas-most-vulnerable/?cid=hp:mainpromo2  They cost 10 billion to build and the tax payers get to foot that bill.  http://www.foe.org/energy/nuclear-reactors  And then there is the issue of what to do with nuclear waste that can take up to millions of years before it is no longer hazardous to human health.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radioactive_waste  So where do they put it?   One possible place was Yucca Mountain.  A mountain, formed by lava, that rests on a fault line.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yucca_mountain  Currently some of it is stored in dry storage casks and much of it, more than can be handled, is kept in spent fuel pools.  http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/42219616/ns/business-us_business/

No matter how safe the experts say nuclear power is they can not know for sure what would happen if an earthquake, hurricane, tornado affected one of our nuclear power plants, or what would really happen if a 9.0 hit Yucca Mountain.  Or what they would do sometime in the next million or so years if Yucca Mountain showed signs of volcanic activity.  It is time to demand the End of Nuclear Power Now in the United States.
