Best Buy has a 100 percent rating from the Human Rights Campaign, and is a company with a stated commitment to diversity and equal rights. Yet, if you search the music shelves of Best Buy or surf their online store, you'll find some of the worst anti-gay music around.
Among the songs and albums available from Best Buy are music from Capleton, Buju Banton, Beenie Man, and Bounty Killer -- four artists who all sing or have sung about killing gay people.
Among Beenie Man's more infamous lines: "I'm dreaming of a new Jamaica, come to execute all the gays."
Capleton: "All queers and sodomites should be killed."
Bounty Killer: "Wipe out the fa*got with a pure laser beam."
Buju Banton: "Rude boys don't promote no queer man, they'll have to die, send for the automatic gun, the Uzi instead, shoot them."
Yet all of this music is available via Best Buy, either in their stores or thru their online shop. Tell Best Buy that they shouldn't be in the business of promoting music that calls for gay people to be burned, murdered, tortured or executed.
Please stop selling music that promotes anti-gay violence
Dear Best Buy,
It recently came to my attention that your store sells, both online and in retails stores, music from several artists that advocate the killing of gays and lesbians. These artists, all of which were searchable on Best Buy's Web site, include Beenie Man, Capleton, Buju Banton and Bounty Killer.
All four of these artists have a track record of lyrics in their songs that advocate violence against gays and lesbians. Beenie Man has suggested that "lesbians should be hung with rope;" Capleton has said that "all queers and sodomites should be killed;" Buju Banton has said that gays and lesbians should be shot and burned with acid; and Bounty Killer has lyrics that include ""wipe out the fa*got with a pure laser beam."
I know Best Buy is committed to corporate diversity and equal rights, given your 100 percent rating from the Human Rights Campaign. Yet all of these artists are currently available via Best Buy's Web site or in your retail stores, and specifically, the anti-gay lyrics mentioned above all comes from songs that are available on albums listed on Best Buy's Web site.
I urge you to take a hard look at the music on your shelves, and the music available online through your online store, to make sure that your company is not selling or supporting music that advocates violence toward gay people.
Thanks for your time.
