Bastrop High School has always held a prayer during graduation. Then student Damon Fowler told the principal that he would contact the ACLU if this blatantly illegal act continued. As we all know, the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment expressively prohibits official governmental recognition of any religion, including the Christian one.
Now, not only has Damon Fowler been given death threats, he has been kicked out of his house by his family and ostracized by the community. One of his teachers, Mitzi Quinn, even demeaned him by saying that Damon had not contributed anything to his school and had no right to say what he did. The atheist community has jumped in and set up a scholarship fund for Damon's college aspirations, and his brother has gladly taken him in to live with him.
Then they went ahead and held the prayer anyway.
Tell Bastrop High School that their actions are illegal and their treatment of Damon Fowler is appalling.
Writing you to explain how appalled I am at your treatment of Damon Fowler
Greetings,
I'm writing to you to express how appalled I am at learning of your school's treatment of student Damon Fowler at the hands of the administration, teaching staff, and students. Schools are supposed to be safe learning environments where students are encouraged to excel. Instead, your school specifically went after one of your students after he (rightly) informed you of the unconstitutionality of one of your actions.
The Establishment Clause of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution expressly forbids public institutions from recognizing any religion in any way, including Christianity.
I urge you, principal and teacher, to stop the vicious attacks against student Damon Fowler and apologize for all the harm that has been done.
