American Apparel recently instituted a policy in which all applicants must provide full body, head to toe photos of themselves in order to be considered for positions at AA stores.

Applicants are judged and selected almost exclusively based on their looks, from their shoes and hairstyles to their race and weight.

This is blatant and obvious discrimination and it should be called out for what it is, not excused as some sort of noble quest for "good fashion sense."

Tell American Apparel to stop hiring and firing employees based on looks.

Stop Hiring Employees Based On Looks

Dear Mr. Charney,

American Apparel needs to immediately discontinue its policy of hiring employees based on photos if it wants to continue functioning as a viable, ethically credible brand.

AA prides itself on the assumption that it does not exploit its workers, and it attempts to market clothing based on this assumption - but if workers are being hired and fired solely for their weight or the shape of their faces or the way they wear their hair, then this assumption is no longer valid.

Recently revealed internal AA documents and emails from former AA employees show that the company obviously discriminates against employees and applicants based on looks. This is a reprehensible and insulting policy, and one that undermines American Apparel's efforts to brand itself as a socially responsible enterprise. If American Apparel has any interest at all in promoting itself as an ethical company, it should immediately stop requesting photos from employees and future applicants.
