Take Action to Clean Up Mercury Pollution
I pledge to...
From Earth Justice :

Nearly every state warns pregnant and nursing women, and young children to limit eating certain types of fish because of high mercury contamination.

Mercury is a neurotoxin that interferes with the brain and nervous system. During the first several years of life, a child's brain is still developing and rapidly absorbing nutrients. Prenatal and infant exposure to even tiny amounts of mercury can cause mental retardation, cerebral palsy and blindness. In adults, mercury can affect fertility and blood pressure, and cause tremors and vision loss.

Mercury comes from large industrial polluters such as power plants and cement kilns. But despite this threat, the Bush administration did nothing to curb this pollution.

But now, things are starting to change. On May 6, the Environmental Protection Agency, led by Administrator Lisa Jackson, proposed to cut mercury from cement kilns by nearly 93 percent! This is a huge step towards cleaning up toxic pollution and making it safe again to eat such fish as striped bass, bluefin tuna and walleye.

Tell Lisa Jackson that you support her move to cut mercury and other toxic air pollution from cement kilns! The EPA can't do it alone and needs your help. This is a strong sign that the EPA is finally serious about science and its mission to protect our health and environment. Let's clean up mercury today!
