On March 16, 2003, U.S. peace activist Rachel Corrie was killed by the Israeli military as she was nonviolently trying to protect a Palestinian home from being destroyed.
On the 6th anniversary of her death, the US Campaign is honoring Rachel's memory by supporting student activism for justice in the Gaza Strip, East Jerusalem and the West Bank. Today, we are announcing our Fall 2009 Campus Organizing Tour. We're also supporting Hampshire College's recent efforts to divest from corporations that profit from Israel's illegal military occupation - including Caterpillar, the company which made the bulldozer that crushed Rachel Corrie.

Not only have Caterpillar bulldozers destroyed tens of thousands of Palestinian homes, vast swaths of Palestinian agricultural lands, and killed Rachel Corrie and dozens of Palestinians during home demolitions, they were also used by the Israeli military as part of "Operation Cast Lead" to destroy Palestinian civilian infrastructure inthe Gaza Strip.

A CAT Bulldozer Killed Rachel Corrie - Why Do You Sell them to the Israeli Military?</b>
Six years ago, this month, Rachel Corrie was crushed to death by a Caterpillar D9 bulldozer as she was nonviolently trying to prevent the demolition of a civilian home in the Gaza Strip. This bulldozer was driven by an Israeli solider and purchased by the Israeli military through contracts that continue to this day.
Recently Amnesty International has documented the use of Caterpillar bulldozers by the Israeli military during recent operations in Gaza that may constitute war crimes. While nothing we do today can bring Rachel back, I implore you to do everything in your power to stop the ongoing patterns of human rights abuses by the Israeli military using your products in the Gaza Strip, West Bank and East Jerusalem
I call on the Board of Directors to investigate whether Israel’s misuse of Caterpillar bulldozers in the Occupied Palestinian Territories constitutes a violation of the U.S. Arms Export Control Act, Foreign Assistance Act, and/or the Leahy Amendment. If Israel is violating human rights with U.S. military aid, then it must be held accountable to these laws which prohibit military aid to human rights violators. To date the following allegations have been brought to the attention of Caterpillar’s senior management:
***Since 1967 Israel has used Caterpillar bulldozers to demolish nearly 9,000 Palestinian homes, leaving more than 50,000 people homeless.
***According to a United Nations report, nearly 3,000 homes in the West Bank are under imminent threat of destruction. In the first quarter of 2008, Israeli authorities demolished 124 structures as compared with 107 during the entirety of 2007, leaving 435 Palestinians displaced, 135 of them children.
***Over the last several years, the Israeli army deployed Caterpillar bulldozers to uproot 200,000 Palestinian olive trees.
***In April 2002 Caterpillar D9s demolished an entire neighborhood in the Jenin refugee camp.
***On March 16, 2003, human rights activist Rachel Corrie was murdered by a Caterpillar D9 bulldozer as she nonviolently tried to prevent it from destroying a Palestinian home in the Gaza Strip.
***On September 20, 2007, 19 year-old Mahmoud al-Kifafi was killed by the Israeli army with a CAT bulldozer in the Gaza Strip. The killing of Mahmoud al-Kifafi occurred during one of Israel's regular invasions of the Gaza Strip. He is at least the 18th person to have been killed by the Israeli army with a CAT bulldozer.
***Caterpillar profits from Israel's construction of the Apartheid Wall-a 25 foot-high wall and fence that has confiscated as much as 40 percent of the West Bank. The wall separates Palestinians from their farmlands and cuts some villages off from the rest of the West Bank, rendering as many as 100,000 people completely isolated.
I would appreciate learning of the steps that Caterpillar intends to take to address the issues raised in this letter. Until Caterpillar ceases to profit from human rights violations against Palestinians, I will continue to oppose your products and services. It is morally reprehensible for Caterpillar to continue to sell bulldozers and equipment to Israel with the knowledge that Israel repeatedly violates basic human rights and international law.
I look forward to your prompt response and an investigation into the aforementioned allegations.
