A year ago President Obama announced he would close the prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Well, a year has passed and Guantanamo is still open, no thanks to fear-mongering by right wing Republicans, political game-players like Sen. Joe Lieberman and a stymied Congress. That's why this month at New Security Action we're partnering with VoteVets to spread the word on why Gitmo needs to be closed now.

New Security Action and VoteVets are currently amassing signatures to a letter addressing Congress on why Gitmo needs to be closed now.

General Colin Powell has said that if it were up to him, he would close Guantanamo Bay not tomorrow, but this afternoon. General David Petraeus made clear in testimony before Congress that he believes that Guantanamo Bay should be closed. Many other military leaders, both active and retired, have expressed this view. They know what is at stake for our men and women in uniform.

We stand with them.

We are also organizing a Veterans' Lobby Day on Capitol Hill Jan. 21 where veterans from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq will go to Congress and tell them the truth about Gitmo, knowledge that they have first-hand from their work on the battlefield. New Security Action and VoteVets are calling for the detention facility's closure.
