Learning a foreign language not only equips a child to thrive in today's globalizing world, but sparks insight and creativity, enriching a child's mental life, and cultivating hearing, speaking and thinking abilities. Children's minds are uniquely built to learn languages--a process that becomes more challenging as a child grows older. We call upon the Monroe County Community School Corporation and the MCCSC middle school principals to use our referendum funding to fully restore cut world language programs to our Middle Schools at both the seventh and eighth grade levels. Our kids deserve to have the doors to a world of diverse cultures and opportunities opened for them at a moment when it makes the biggest difference in their lives. Languages belong among the core competencies of children growing up in a plural world that increasingly prizes intercultural skills and the breadth of imagination that springs from them.
