Support WREN's Proposal For A Wildlife Center In Virginia Beach
The Issue
Tell Virginia Beach City Council that you support the Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Network (WREN)'s proposal for the development of a wildlife facility. Members of WREN include the Virginia Beach SPCA Wildlife Program, Evenlyn's Wildlife Refuge and other independent rehabilitators which represent 74% of South Hampton Road's wildlife rehabilitation organizations and individuals, providing care to 75% of the region's orphaned and injured wildlife on a volunteer basis.
The city of Virginia Beach designated 50 acres of city-owned land for the establishment of a wildlife facility but due to an "oversight", skipped the normal proposal process and only offered the property to a smaller Chesapeake-based wildlife organization. In a city-sponsored meeting, Wildlife Response representatives stated they had no interest in working collaboratively with other wildlife groups to form the center even though they still intended to rely on the services of WREN members. As a result of this oversight and Wildlife Response’s refusal to work cooperatively, the City will be offering this property up for bids at the end of June and we are prepared to put forth our own proposal.
Through its support of WREN in the establishment of a wildlife facility, the citizens of South Hampton Roads will receive expanded wildlife rehabilitation services by an organization that already has the demonstrated capacity and fiduciary capability to see the full project through to completion as well as the leadership skills necessary to facilitate its daily operations.
