The Palmetto Tree has been a symbol of Clemson University since the conception of the institution in 1890. The purpose of our school is the betterment of the people of South Carolina.  The state flag has depicted a Palmetto tree since 1765. The Palmetto can also be seen on many Clemson symbols, such as Hardin Hall and the Clemson Seal since 1890, school ring since 1896, and coat of arms since 1987. All depict representations of the Palmetto tree and are all major contributors to the Clemson identity. Strangely, there is no Palmetto tree on Clemson’s campus.

The objective of this project proposal is to gain approval and raise awareness to place a sabal Palmetto tree on Clemson’s campus. The site location will be researched to find the most appropriate place on campus for the most people to enjoy the beauty of the Palmetto tree.

Clemson students, faculty, staff and visitors will all benefit from this project because it will compliment the beauty of our Clemson campus by adding a symbol of South Carolina that we have all learned to hold dear.
