Support peaceful transition, dialogue, and democracy in Egypt

The Issue

The people of Egypt have made their voices heard on 1/25. Religious extremists have hijacked the people's peaceful demonstrations and attacked and killed hundreds of Policemen. The same religious extremists who orchestrated and executed the heinous attack of 9/11.

Friday 1/28: Religious extremists took advantage of the situation to advance their extreme agenda. They led the Friday prayer crowds. Armed with Molotov cocktails and other weapons, they attacked the Police who were under strict orders not to open fire. Showing extreme restraint the day ended with over 20 dead police officers throughout the country. Hundreds of police vehicles burned to the ground. Over 90% of police buildings burned down. Over 18,000 weapons stolen from police stations.

For example in Elgomrok Alexandria, the religious extremists lynched a naked police officer they were able to capture.

Disarmed, and demoralized, the Police force seemed to disappear from the streets by Friday evening.

In an effort to drown Egypt in chaos, the Religious extremists then proceeded to attack the prisons releasing more than 30,000 criminals including murderers and rapists. Widespread looting of public and private buildings has been taking place.

Again, in Alexandria the Religious extremists burned down the governorate building, all local municipal buildings, all police stations, all government service departments including department of health, department of education, …

Sunday 1/30: organized simultaneous attacks by the religious extremists thugs on all 3 phone company central offices, organized simultaneous attacks on both water treatment plants in the city, organized simultaneous attacks on all 4 electric distribution stations.
We cannot afford to have the likes of Ben Laden take over Egypt; a country of 80 million people, 1.5 times the size of Texas with $500 Billion/year Gross Domestic Product. The entire Arab world goes the way Egypt goes, like Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Libya, Sudan, Somalia, Tunisia, Algeria, and Morocco. If Egyptian president Mubarak is removed from Egypt today and the religious extremists take over, they will be in a position to lead the 1.5 billion Muslims in the world in holy Jihad against the American Infidels. The tragedy of 9/11 will pale in comparison. They will seek nuclear weapons similar to what we see in Iran.
Egyptian president Mubarak has taken unprecedented steps for political reform to bring about real democracy in Egypt. In 2005 the Egyptian constitution was changed to allow for a presidential election instead of a referendum on the current president. He appointed a Vice President for the first time in 30 years to answer the concerns that his son is preparing to take over. Most recently he has changed the entire cabinet appointing well-respected people from all political parties. All are unprecedented measures in Egypt. In 2010, the Egyptian government spent more on infrastructure and public projects, and exports drove GDP growth to more than 5% ($500 billion – 27th in the world) almost twice the US rate for 2010.
Egypt's young democracy must be allowed to take shape peacefully without the current chaos and the concerted effort by the religious extremists to degrade the Egyptian government's ability to provide basic services and security.
We must support Egypt's president Mubarak as the agent for peaceful democratic transition in Egypt. The time is now. Tomorrow a religious empire may be born and there will be next to nothing we can do to protect American lives and Interests.
