Support ice hockey in Ottawa, Illinois
The Issue
Twin Rivers Ice Arena is a non-profit group of grassroots ice hockey players based in the rural Chicago town of Ottawa, Illinois. Twin Rivers aims to bring accessible hockey to those of all ages through a public indoor ice hockey arena.
In the winter of 2010, area ice hockey enthusiasts maintained a sheet of ice to play pond hockey all winter long. This location was in a bank, where a flowing canal once ran. The Ottawa Fire Department would hose down the area to help providing a skating surface while volunteers, some charter members of Twin Rivers, would spend up to four hours a day resurfacing the ice with a bucket of water and a squeegee.
Every weekend the surface in the old canal was populated with nearly two dozen hockey players. By the great turnout, members of Twin Rivers have gained support from many Ottawa residents who have expressed great interest in a public ice rink designated in a visible and welcoming area.
On April 30, 2011, the charter members of the non-profit met to dicuss further ideas of the ice rink, bringing awareness, assigned board of director positions, and addressed fundraising plans.
The Ottawa City Council urged the non-profit group to show support for an outdoor ice hockey rink within the community.
Please show your support for cause, and help bring accessible hockey to the rural Chicagoland area. And as a result, the Ottawa City Council will advance in looking for feasible funding for the project through state grants. And these signatures can be shown to ice hockey organizations for additional support.
The Fox River flows into the Illinois River in the heart of downtown Ottawa, hence the name Twin Rivers Ice Arena.
