While homelessness is always a tragedy, it's especially unsettling to see homelessness touch the lives of so many men and women who served our country. <br /><b><br /></b>- Between one-fourth to one-fifth of the homeless population are veterans. In the course of one year, more than 325,000 veterans experience at least one night of homelessness.<br /><br />- 45 percent of homeless report indicators of mental health problems during the past year, and 57 percent report having had a mental health problem during their lifetime.<br /><br />-Roughly 56% of homeless veterans are African American or Hispanic.<br /><br />(more information can be found on our <a href='http://www.endhomelessness.org/section/policy/focusareas/veterans'>website</a>, the Administration's <a href='http://www1.va.gov/homeless/page.cfm?pg=46'>National Center on Homelessness Among Veterans site</a>, or Shannon Moriarty's recent <a href='http://homelessness.change.org/blog/category/veteran_homelessnesshttp://homelessness.change.org/blog/category/veteran_homelessness'>blogpost</a> on the issue.) <br /><br />We can and must do more to support those people who have stood in the service of our country. <br /><br />Pledge to support the <a href='http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/D?d111:1:./temp/~bdXHvb:@@@D&amp;summ2=m&amp;|/bss/111search.html|'>Homes for Heroes Act</a>, which would provide housing services for very low-income veterans. The legislation would improve access to supportive housing services, housing assistance vouchers, and other vital services that would keep veterans housed and prevent homelessness. <br /><br />Please pledge your support today. <br /><br /><br />
