Retract article, and a published apology
The Issue
Dear Proponent of Animal Rights:
Please read this article posted on SunSentinel.com's website: http://articles.sun-sentinel.com/2012-05-08/news/fl-oakland-park-ducks-20120507_1_muscovy-ducks-local-governments This was printed on the front page of Sun Sentinel on May 9, 2012.
This reporter, Ihosvani Rodriguez, is advocating HARM to these muscovy ducks by the general public. While Ihosvani cites that humane killing is something that cannot be done by the average member of the community; the tips to "destroy" these ducks are cruel, inhumane, and just disgusting.
Rates of animal cruelty against these ducks increase every time these articles are published. The Sun Sentinel knows first hand, and dealt with an injured (harmed) muscovy duck in front of their premises the first time Ihosvani wrote regarding these ducks.
This article does indicate "legal" ways of dealing with these animals, however, none of them are accessible nor appropriate for the general public to implement themselves. "Humanely killing" the animals yet not mentioning ways to do so, AND letting the general public know that this is okay and in fact supported by Florida Fish & Wildlife results in more injured and tortured ducks, many of which end up at Duck Haven in Margate. This is a direct contradiction of what Ihosvani states in the article.
As an authoritative news figure in South Florida, Sun Sentinel and Ihosvani are essentially advocating cruelty to these animals, and giving the public the green light to take care of the muscovy duck population on their own accord.
Please help me raise awarenes on the many ways that their article is encouraging animal cruelty. The goal of this petition SunSentinel to retract this article, and issue an immediate, published written apology.
Regards,
Veda Rammohan, MPH
