Stop the attempt at privatization of the Sumter County Library System

The Issue

Privatization of public libraries, while touted by politicians as a way to lower costs to governments while increasing quality of service, has often shown to result in higher overall costs to the governing body, decreased amounts of available material for circulation, fewer adult and children's programs offered, and fewer databases offered to patrons of the libraries; overall a decreased level of service. There is currently only one private company who offers library services, Library Systems & Services (LSSI) based out of Maryland; this leaves no room for competitive bidding between different companies, as no others exist, providing LSSI with a monopoly on the private library industry. Currently, Osceola County is the only county in the state of Florida that has accepted privatization of its library system, by a narrow vote of 3-2; such a measure having been rejected in such other counties as Sarasota and Hernando. Sumter County residents are proud of their libraries, and do not want to see them taken over by a private, for-profit corporation.
