About this Petition Petition Letter

A petition to increase the rights of students in the publice school system. Students should be taught about their rights, using them, and how not to infringe on the rights of others. In the school system now student rights are restricted by the school administration. This can be understood but there is such a gross misuse of power that has occured to where students are told they have no rights what so ever in the school. The constitution is dying  among the youth due to this. Please help reform our schools.

Dear Representative,

This petition is for the increase of student rights. Public schools should be a Mecca for students to learn about their individual rights and their freedoms to express themselves. Nowadays a student cant even express their opinion out loud or in writing without getting suspended. Schools should not have the authority to act in loco parentis. This new generation of starved students dont know half their rights. It is my plan for public schools to be reshaped in order to influence individualism among students, which will lead to a brighter and better future. In 1969 Justice Fortas stated: “neither students nor teachers shed their constitutional rights to freedom of speech or expression at the schoolhouse gate.” Why is it in 2008 students are told they have no rights? Students are suppose to be the future of our Country but they do not know their fundamental freedoms. I am begging you to please reform this system and allow for students to be free and to fully appreciate the Constitution of the United States. It is my dream that one day students will be free to express how they feel about a subject rather than bite their tongues in fear of punishment!
