The City of Guelph in Ontario plans to develop 671 acres of the Hanlon Creek area into a Business Park. 

This acreage consists of Old Growth Forest, Provincially Significant wetlands and a headwater tributary, as well as being a suspected home to the endangered Jefferson Salamander.  On these lands, one can also find 112 species of birds, 16 species of mammals, 20 species of reptiles and amphibians, and 270 different types of plants and trees, including an estimated 5-600 year old Hop Hornbeam tree.

Aside from being a pristine wilderness, these lands are vitally important as a headwater tributary feeding the Speed and Grand Rivers.  Also containing the northern part of the Paris-Galt Morraine, the backbone of our watershed, these lands are critical to the health and development of Guelph and every community downstream that rely on the Grand for water.

The site of the development was occupied by 30 protesters who have managed to win an injunction halting the development for 30 days.  The City was also successful with an injunction to eject the protesters from the site.  The Courts have deferred the matter to the Provincial Ministry of Natural Resources for oversight.
