Carolina Schmidt, CHILE's Minister of National Women’s Service

In the last few weeks Carolina Schmidt has tirelessly led a campaign to end violence against women.  Unfortunately, she has done it by using anti gays slurs, making women invisible and browbeating men.

She has truly good intentions, but her tactics are misguided.

Dear Carolina,

I know you are as appalled as I am about the on-going rates of violence against women in Chile.
It is untenable and must be stopped.

We are counting on you, as Minister of the National Women’s Service to play a key role in ending these crimes and helping to change this prevalent cultural practice.

Every person in Chile should live free from violence – women, children, gays, native people, the poor, everyone, as well as men.

We urge you to use your power and influence to create, lead and run campaigns that truly tackle the hard issues affecting women and girls. At the same time, you must honor the rest of Chileans who deserve the same right and privilege – to live free from all types of violence – physical, emotional and verbal.

Imagino que Usted está tan consternada como yo por el sostenido aumento de los niveles de violencia contra las mujer en Chile.

Es una realidad insostenible y debe ser detenida.

Contamos con Usted, como ministra del Servicio Nacional de la Mujer, para desempeñar un papel clave en poner fin a estos crímenes y ayudar a cambiar esta práctica cultural tan arraigada en nuestro país.

Todos los chilenos y chilenas deberían vivir libres de violencia - mujeres, niños, homosexuales, indígenas, pobres, al igual que los hombres.

Le instamos a utilizar su poder e influencia para crear, dirigir y ejecutar campañas que aborden las cuestiones difíciles que afectan a las mujeres y las niñas. Y al mismo tiempo, es fundamental respetar también al resto de los chilenos y las chilenas , ya que todos tienen derecho a vivir libres de violencia, sea esta física, emocional o verbal.
