10/12/10 Update:
July 20, 2009 - Interior Secretary Ken Salazar announced that the agency will temporarily place 1 million acres of public lands surrounding the Grand Canyon off limits to new uranium mining claims, as well as exploration and development of existing, unpatented claims.
Representative Raúl Grijalva (D-Ariz.), has also introduced a bill, the Grand Canyon Watersheds Protection Act of 2009, which would offer permanent protection by banning exploration and new claims on roughly 1 million acres of public land bordering the Grand Canyon.

Tell Your Rep to Support the Grand Canyon Watershed Protection Act

Dear [Decision Maker],

Before leaving office, the previous Secretary of the Interior, Dirk Kempthorne, ignored a mandate from Congress to withdraw mining claims to 1 million acres around the Grand Canyon. Uranium mining around the Grand Canyon and Colorado River could devastate tourism, which generates more than half a billion dollars for the economy, and would threaten the drinking water for 30 million people living in the western United States.

Please personalize your message

I urge you to work with the new Secretary of the Interior, Ken Salazar to permanently protect Grand Canyon from uranium mining; as well as use the power of your office to update the antiquated 1872 mining law, and pass the Grand Canyon Protection Act.
