Stop the SNAP Cuts!

Stop the SNAP Cuts!

The Issue

More than 48 million Americans, including nearly 2 million  New York City residents, rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly known as Food Stamps) to put food on their tables.  On November 1, all SNAP recipients saw a reduction in their benefits when the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act’s temporary boost expires, leaving a family of three with $20-25 less in benefits per month.   That’s not all!  Congress is considering an additional $40 billion cut from the program.

The cuts will most heavily affect low-income families with children whose parent(s) work for a living but don’t make enough to adequately feed their families.  Working families with kids are 72% of all SNAP beneficiaries.  75% of SNAP households include a child, senior, or disabled person.

Tell Speaker Boehner, your representative, and the President that you think it is wrong to cut SNAP, our country's most basic anti-hunger safety net program.
