STOP the proposed Ohio University Co-Gen Natural Gas Plant: Administrators Need to Respect Athens' Community Health
The Issue
Fracking for natural gas puts our community's health, environment and future at risk. Not only is natural gas not a climate solution - it leaves us vulnerable to more climate change, increasing future tuition hikes, and a polluted environment. We need true leadership and clean energy solutions to maintain a stable climate, affordable tuition, clean water, and the pursuit of ethical investments. I support the OU Student Sierra Coalition's request for the following:
- A true short- and long-term cost analysis and consideration of geothermal and solar thermal as sustainable sources for heating or cooling as alternatives to a 70-100 million dollar new gas fired power plant.
- Immediate approval of a contract to purchase low-cost local renewable energy to address electricity needs.
- Non-renewal of the electricity contract with FirstEnergy Solutions, and the exploration of low-cost, wind-based contracts similar to Ohio State University.
- The prohibition of hydraulic fracturing (fracking) on university lands.
