Over the past five years, 70,000 dogs have been killed in Yerevan. The city government allots half a million dollars per year to kill stray dogs. The company hired to carry out the sterilization and neutralization of stray animals is allegedly relying on an extermination strategy, rounding them up and shooting them. Residents have described how gunmen come at all hours, killing any stray dogs they can find, cutting off their tails as evidence; the more they kill, the more they earn. In early June, activists rallied in front of the National Assembly building asking for an end to the slaughter.
Activists have also created an event on Facebook entitled "Complaint to the Mayor About Dog Killings" which people may virtually attend in support of the cause.

Please Stop the Killing of Stray Dogs
Dear Sir/Madam,
I was horrified to learn of the killing of stray dogs in Yerevan. Killing is not the solution for dealing with the stray dog overpopulation.
The current approach of extermination is not only inhumane, but also ineffective in controlling their population. The number of stray dogs is increasing in Yerevan, as the culling cannot keep up with the number of litter births. The remaining dogs breed more successfully as the competition for resources is reduced. Instead, the outcome has been that the dogs have become more aggressive, resulting in an increased number of attack incidents. In addition, witnesses have noted that sterilised dogs are also being killed, along with animals who have shown no signs of aggression. Without adopting new solutions, the stray population will never reach a manageable limit and the inhumane practices currently in use would have to continue. This is unacceptable.
There are humane alternatives that have proven effective. A long term approach includes an expansion of the current animal shelter system and the implementation of a citywide spay and neuter program, which is a workable, effective and humane solution. This would not only drastically reduce the problem of stray dogs, but also address the issue of territorial dominance by stray dogs. Culls also reinforce a culture of violence towards animals. Measures need to be taken to change the public attitude towards stray animals. Furthermore, legislative changes are imperative; the city government must abolish abuse towards animals by introducing legislation that punishes animal abuse.
Please stop the inhumane killing of stray dogs and implement humane methods !
Sincerely,
[Your name]
