How We Won

Jan 20, 2012

While the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP Act (PIPA) were both put on hold on Friday, January 20, the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) became the first major industry association to drop its support for SOPA. The ESA is the main trade association for video game companies and was one of the main business associations pushing for the bills. The ESA spent $190,000 lobbying the Senate to pass PIPA in just six months in 2011.

In a statement, the ESA said: "Although the need to address this pervasive threat to our industry's creative investment remains, concerns have been expressed about unintended consequences stemming from the current legislative proposals. Accordingly, we call upon Congress, the Obama Administration, and stakeholders to refocus their energies on producing a solution that effectively balances both creative and technology interests."

Mark Kern, CEO of Red 5 Studios, created this Change.org campaign calling on the ESA to drop support for SOPA that was signed by over 32,000 people. Kern also formed an alternative organization for gaming companies and fans who oppose the ESA called the League for Gamers and had called for a boycott of the ESA's largest and most profitable annual event, E3. To continue to stay involved with the League for Gamers, visit: www.LeagueForGamers.org.

Why This Is Important

UPDATE: The ESA has withdrawn support of the CURRENT version of SOPA/PIPA. but they will be back. Let them know you don't want this legislation back in ANY form by signing this petition.

The ESA's support of the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), is a direct attack on free speech and innovation in gaming. SOPA would allow corporations and the US government to shut down any site on the internet. The ESA is a direct supporter of this bill, and as a gamer, you can fight back by signing this petition, and asking press to boycott E3, the ESA largest money maker. This petition is sponsored by the League For Gamers, a new gamer and developer advocacy group. Visit us at www.leagueforgamers.org

Drop support for the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP (PIPA)

Greetings,

I just signed the following petition addressed to: Entertainment Software Association.

----------------
Drop support for the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP (PIPA)

The ESA's support of the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), is a direct attack on free speech and innovation in gaming. SOPA would allow corporations and the US government to shut down any site on the internet. The ESA claims to represent gamers through the Video Game Voter's Network, but you have ignored all the opposition to these bills on the VGVN Facebook page. Please listen to your gamers and developer members and withdraw support for PIPA immediately.

Sincerely,

[Your name]
