Every year hundreds of thousands of seals are mercilessly killed in the Canadian Seal Hunt. The seals are killed for their pelts (fur), meat, and for their oils. These are sold to buyers in Norway, Russia, and China.
The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA), claims that the hakapik, when used properly, kills the seals quickly and painlessly. However, even if the animals are killed painlessly, it is still a gross example of the exploitation and killing of animals for monetary gain. This is a violation of the rights of these animals to live free of cruelty, abuse, and persecution.
Furthermore, a study of the 2001 Canadian seal hunt conducted by five independent veterinarians, commissioned by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), concluded that, although the hakapik is a humane means of hunting, many hunters were not using it properly. This improper use, they said, was leading to "considerable and unacceptable suffering." In numerous cases, the seals had to be struck multiple times before they were considered "unconscious."
According to the People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), many of the seals are even skinned alive.
Please give a voice to these animals that cannot speak for themselves. Take the time to send a letter of protest to the Canadian Government. Let them know that you are completely opposed to the slaughter of seals and that until these is stopped you will not support Canada in any way. This means no travling there, and not buying Canadian products of any kind.
Other Ways To Help:
Remember, animals have no voice in which to speak out against the mistreatment they often receive. You can help by being an ambassador for animals. Let others know about the seal hunt and what they can do to help.
Never buy any products that contain seal oils or seal pelts. Never buy seal meat.
Take a moment to visit the website Canadian Seal Hunt. Here you can find out about other ways to boycott the seal hunt and save these animals.

Seal Hunt
To The Hon. Loyola Hearn
I am writing to you today to urge you to bring an immediate halt to the annual Canadian Seal Hunts.
I am aware that the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA), claims that the hakapik, when used properly, kills the seals quickly and painlessly.
This improper use, they said, was leading to "considerable and unacceptable suffering." In numerous cases, the seals had to be struck multiple times before they were considered "unconscious." According to the People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals(PETA), many of the seals are even skinned alive.
Canada is often looked at as one of the world's most liberal and progressive countries. The brutality carried out during seal hunts certainly hurts and shames this positive image. As a US citizen, I vow that until the seal hunt is halted I will no longer travel to Canada and support its tourism industry or purchase any Canadian products of any kind.
I will encourage others in the United States to do the same.
Signed
