With severely restrictive abortion laws already in place and 11 new additional anti-choice bills currently under consideration by the (predominantly anti-choice) House and Senate, Michigan is poised to become one of the most restrictive states in the nation with regard to abortion access.
Among the bills currently being considered:
SB 13 would redefine "an individual" (for legal purposes) to include "a fetus."
HB 4143 and 4147 would prohibit state insurance companies from offering abortion coverage without the purchase of an additional rider (though such riders are not actually available)
HB 4433 would mandate that all women undergo an ultrasound a minimum of two hours prior to an abortion procedure, on the most visually accurate monitor available, and would require that "The physician or qualified person assisting the physician shall ensure that the ultrasound screen is turned toward the patient to allow her to easily view the active ultrasound image of the fetus”
SB 135 would remove the ability of a minor woman to petition the court a second time for a waiver of parental consent for abortion
These regulations have nothing to do with the health and safety of women, and everything to do with a conservative agenda that denies women equality by prohibiting even their most basic right to autonomy over their own bodies and restricting access to a safe and legal medical procedure. Tell our representatives to reject legislation that prohibits women's reproductive freedom.
Don't Vote Against Women's Rights
Greetings,
I'm writing to express my strong disapproval of HB 4143, 4147, and 4433; and SB 13 and 135. In one way or another, these bills all aim to limit a woman's access to abortion. None of these bills have any basis in improving the health or safety of women or children. Rather, they are purely ideological in nature, and based on religious and other "moral" concepts which should have no place in determining law.
Abortion is a safe and legal medical procedure. All further ethical debates or considerations surrounding the issue should be left to a matter of private and personal decision. The role of the state should be to protect the rights and safeties of its citizens, not to impose upon them one particular system of "morality." Laws such as HB 4433--requiring a woman to view ultrasound footage of a fetus before undergoing an abortion--are meant only to render abortion an increasingly traumatic and shameful experience.
Women's equality cannot exist without reproductive freedom. Whatever your personal convictions on the matter, I ask you to recognize the necessity of separating intimate personal decisions from that which should be enforced by legislation. Please defend women's right to choose.
