The University of California Regents are proposing to increase student fees by another 8%. This comes exactly 1 year after they approved an increase of 32% to student fees. In the last 5 years, student fees have increased by $4,000, and the quality of our education has plummeted. On top of that, financial problems still loom. Will another fee increase really help make a difference when a 300% increase since 2001 has failed to do so? Help us stop the increase to the cost of our education.
Stop the 8% Fee Increases
Greetings,
University of California President Mark Yudof and the UC Regents have proposed yet another fee increase of 8% to UC students' tuition fees and student services fee. This comes exactly one year after the regents approved a 32% fee increase, the largest in UC history. Since 2001, student tuition has increased 300%, as UC students now pay over $10,000 in tuition fees and over $900 in student services fees.
Even more absurd is the fact that the quality of education has continued to decrease as the cost of education has increased. UC students can testify to this as they have experienced professors being laid off, less classes being offered, larger classes sizes, etc. Students are now forced to take out larger loans, work two or more jobs, and some are even forced to go to sleep hungry because they must save the couple of dollars in their bank account for when they really need it. These fee hikes have especially affected undocumented students as 1 in every 4 are forced to drop out due to restrictions against them receiving financial aid.
While it is understood that our country, especially the state of California, is in hard economic times, the solution does not lie in increasing the cost of education. Will another increase to student fees really help end the financial turmoil the UC system faces, when a $4,000 fee increase in the past five years failed to do so? As students of the University of California, we refuse to let this happen. Please sign our petition and help us demand these three things to the UC Regents:
1) Protect 2011-2012 academic year - No Fee Increase
2) Add student representation to Investment Advisory Group
3) Allow access to institutional aid for undocumented students
