Stop Newark/Nestle Now!

The Issue

We cannot allow Nestle to pull off its latest marketing scheme by infiltrating our cities in the name of "good health."

They are a major contributor to childhood obesity by aggressively marketing their infant formulas which are made from modified cow’s milk, added sugars, a variety of fats (palm, soybean and coconut oils), plus a long list of chemicals to adjust nutrient levels and give the product the appearance of a milk. Artificial feeding often leads to large volume feeds with parent-controlled overfeeding of infants, contributing to the obesity epidemic in the US.

Dangling a big check ($100,000) in front of Mayor Booker allows them to cover-up their marketing practices which violate the World Health Organization’s International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes and subsequent World Health Assembly Resolutions. This should not be tolerated at the expense of children’s health in one of the poorest cities in America.

Nestlé is targeted by an international boycott because it is the worst of the baby food companies in terms of the volume of violations of the Code and Resolutions and the provisions it violates. Today Nestlé is one of the most boycotted companies on the planet and tries to improve its image and divert criticism by offering money to good causes.  See: www.babymilkaction.org

"We, the undersigned, call on Mayor Booker to end this relationship with Nestlé immediately and to call on Nestlé executives to change their marketing strategies if they are serious about addressing obesity and health concerns.

Maria ParlapianoPetition StarterI have devoted my life to helping new parents and babies for over 20 years. I am a nurse and lactation consultant. I have 3 healthy grown children. Two years ago I contacted Cory Booker regarding a program focused on reducing childhood obesity from the most vulnerable up. We were supposed to meet then but the woman in charge was let go and Mayor Booker was focused on his re-election. As you can imagine, seeing the recent press was quite disturbing.
