The Town of Canmore intends to euthanize up to 2,000 feral rabbits, allegedly because they are damaging properties and may potentially lure predators into downtown. The town council recently approved allocating $50,000 to trap the bunnies and ship them to be used as food. The town is finalizing an agreement with a contractor that has been hired to trap and kill the rabbits but the door remains open for a non-profit group to propose a relocation program. The cull is expected to begin this month.

Use Non-Lethal Methods for Managing Canmore's Rabbit Population
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am contacting you regarding the feral rabbit management plan in Canmore that aims to trap and euthanize up to 2,000 rabbits. I strongly object to this convenience killing, especially when there are alternatives available.
The City has allocated $50,000 for the removal of the rabbits, yet is demanding people who want to save the rabbits to pay for the costs. This money should be allocated to fund groups willing to aid. The council must rely on a non-lethal approach such as humanely capturing, sterilizing and relocating the rabbits to a sanctuary. Victoria, Kelowna and Calgary have all worked out positive sanctuary solutions.
Furthermore, advocating euthanasia is sending out a message that the life of an animal is meaningless, thereby reinforcing a culture of violence towards animals. The council should also take into account the tourism implications if this cull should go ahead.
I urge you to call off the cull and to turn to non-lethal options, or to at the very least postpone the cull in order to provide sufficient time for volunteer groups to gather funds and land.
Sincerely,
[Your name]
