The Ukrainian authorities intend to slaughter hundreds of thousands of stray animals in preparation for the 2012 UEFA European Football Championship. All over Ukraine, stray animals are being poisoned and in some cities even burned alive in mobile crematoriums.

Killing of strays in Ukraine

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am contacting you regarding the horrendous treatment of stray animals in Ukraine, in preparations for the 2012 UEFA European Football Championship. Stray animals are being poisoned or shot all over the country, and even burned alive in some cities such as Lysychansk, where the local government has resorted to mobile crematoriums. Particularly in the case of Lysychansk, the population of homeless animals is not even significant and is currently very easily sustainable in comparison to the city's population. The money spent on a mobile furnace (198,000 UAH or 20,500 euros) is money that should be funding humane alternatives rather than funding murder. From what I understand, many sterilization programs have over time even been cancelled by official authorities.

There are humane methods for maintaining a stray population, such as by implementing a nation-wide government support of spay and neuter schemes, by developing education programs on responsible pet ownership and on the necessity of neutering pets, by establishing humane, no-kill municipal shelters for animals, providing more assistance to local animal protection and welfare organizations and voluntary associations, and by promoting national and international adoption schemes. These methods have proven to be effective for controlling stray populations. The authorities must change their attitude and treatment of animals and start regarding them as sentient beings, rather than pests that need to be eliminated. Brutally killing strays is not an option in a humane society, nor is it even a solution, as previous attempts have denounced mass-killings as ineffective. Hundreds of modern cities around the world have resolved this same situation in a humane manner by raising awareness.

I respectfully ask that you end this senseless massacre of animals. The deliberate killing of animals is an act that only tarnishes the reputation of Ukraine as a modern and progressive country. Until these killings have ended, I will boycott Ukraine and Euro-2012, and will encourage others to do the same.

Sincerely,

[Your name]
