How the African-American Marriage Decline Affects Everyone message creates the perfect storm for increased teen bullying, mean girl syndrome, ostracizing and separating young Black girls and White girls by inflaming racial divide amongst teen girls, with increased racial competition over dating white boys. In the end, the over emphasis on the racial aspects of relationship development lowers self-esteem and confidence for all girls. The message is demeaning as both Black and White girls feel that Banks does not respect that they can figure out on their own who to marry and set their own marriage choices and that he is using race to divide and not unite people.
