Stand up For the Kailua Community and Say No to Big Box

Aloha,

I support the Kailua community and, therefore, I am opposed to Target coming to
Kailua.

Proper land management requires a comprehensive, publicly-funded planning
process to evaluate impacts from four currently permitted or proposed
developments (Kailua Town Center phase 3; Horton’s Ironwoods at Kailua 153-
unit condominium complex; addition of 2,000 residents associated with Kaneohe
Marine Corp Base; and proposed Big Box retailer, Target, in Kailua's town core).

These projects represent increased residential density and utilize a market
model that depends on a population of shoppers from outside the current Kailua
and neighboring Waimanalo communities. It is the responsibility of the City to
prevent irreparable harm to the community by allowing piece-meal traffic studies
conducted by the commercial entities that stand to profit.

It is the responsibility of Target to be respectful in its dealings with the
community. And it is Kaneohe Ranch and the Castle family's (landowner’s responsibility) to insure proper use of its lands in Kailua.

Kailua is a vibrant neighborhood whose spirit and character are derived from
a strong sense of community. I believe the Kailua community has a right and
a responsibility to encourage growth that is based upon sound planning and a
recognition that redevelopment can be achieved by pursuing a balance between
financial viability and community continuity. Redeveloping the Don Quijote site
with a big box store is not progress based upon respectful living or community
continuity.
