Community members and local students have maintained Morning Glory for two years at Union Avenue and Southern Boulevard in the South Bronx, hosting events, growing organic food for the neighborhood, and providing a venue for student involvement and activism for nearby Gompers High School students. Last week, city workers locked gardeners out of their space and destroyed raised beds, compost bins and a seating area with tables and chairs.

We, the undersigned, call on the department of Housing, Preservation and Development to cease the demolition of Morning Glory Community Garden, and meet with gardeners to inform them of land use plans for their space and negotiate an agreement beneficial to the people of the neighborhood. We have visited the garden and/or attended events in the past, and believe it is an important community resource that must not be destroyed.
