SNAP Challenge

The Issue

Due to the economic distress the United States has faced in recent years dependence on the SNAP program has increased. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly food stamps,  is designed to provide food and nutrition assistance to those in need. In Oregon, one in five received SNAP benefits in 2010.

The Oregon State University Students in Free Enterprise team will eat on three dollars a day for one week to raise awareness of how difficult it is for people on government nutrition assistance programs to purchase healthy and nutritious food on a food stamp budget.  SIFE will be organizing, facilitating and participating in this SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) Challenge. The challenge will start on November 12th and run until November 18th.

Oregon State University SIFE seeks your participation and support.

There are three options for participation in the SNAP Challenge:

  1. 1. Restrict your food and drink purchases to $21 for the duration of the Challenge. (one week)

  1. 2. Give up one meal for one day that week.

  1. 3. Blog about the theoretical difficulties of living on the SNAP program. For example, “What would a budget and menu look like for a SNAP recipient who is diabetic?”
