Shut Down Puratone Factory Farm

The Issue

We are a group of science students studying at the University of British Columbia, and are very passionate about animal welfare and the extensive effects of factory farming. Puratone, (in Manitoba, Canada) is one of the largest pork producers in Canada, therefore it is essential this factory farm enacts policies that promote humane treatment of animals. Puratone is a supplier for corporates such as Walmart, Superstore, and Sobeys: unfortunately, consumers are not sufficiently aware of the cruel confinement, needless and extensive pain and torture that these animals experience daily. We started this petition after watching an eye opening video of an undercover investigation by Mercy For Animals Canada of the horrendous conditions and animal treatment at Puratone. Such cruelties include slamming pigs on the concrete floor, castrating males and slicing off tails on fully conscious pigs, kicking, slapping, and pulling of ears to force pigs to walk, and finally, gestation crates that prohibit any movement, even their ability to lie down. Based on the undercover footage retreived, we see the only solution fit is to demand the shut down of Puratone factory farm. Dr. Ian Duncan, holder of the oldest university chair in animal welfare in North America, illustrates the horrific suffrage by explaining "it is the worst cruelty inflicted on an animal that I have witnessed in many years”. Management for Puratone has the power and obligation to foster new policies that abolish the use of gestation crates and infliction of pain on innocent animals, yet nothing is changing. The possibility for change is why we decided to start this petition, but we need your support! We believe this can make a difference: by shutting down a major factory farm and attacking the problem directly, we have the power to create a sustainable future: that is, a small change at first has the ability to produce a ripple effect, potentially influencing other factory farms to change their policies that will obliterate needless animal suffrage at the expense of consumers' mere desire for meat.
