The Issue
Omaha's Equal Employment Ordinance, to be introduced by Councilman Ben Gray on February 28th, would add the LGBT community to the existing city's non-discrimination ordinance, preventing individuals perceived as LGBT from being fired for their orientation or gender identity, as well as being refused service in a public establishment. Local advocates have been working for over a year to get the ordinance passed, a similar ordinance was voted down in a 3-3-1 vote in October of 2010. Local opposition is doing everything it can to prevent a vote on the Equal Employment Ordinance. It is important to legally protect the hardworking citizens of Omaha.
