The Issue
November 20, 2011
On Monday November 14, 2011, the campus came together in a spirit of unity to stand up against the hate crime perpetrated on the night of November 11. As we are all aware, this hate crime was not without precedent. The sad truth, however, is that when such events have taken place in the past, they have not precipitated adequate policy change. We want this time to be different. We want to harness the momentum generated by the outpouring of student, faculty, staff, and alumni support to effect change that will prevent crimes like this from occurring again. In that vein, we present two demands to the administration. We request a response by Monday 28th November, 2011.
The first demand is written to address the lack of transparency with regard to protocol for the response to all types of discrimination and crime. The second demand is written in reaction to the weaknesses in the administrative response to the hate crime perpetrated on the night of 11/11/11. Those weaknesses include: the fact that the threatening nature and details of the crime and punitive measures for the perpetrator were not disclosed to the campus; the fact that the reporter of the crime was kept waiting by CSS for an extended period and that the Dean on Call was not immediately notified, leaving the reporter without prompt emotional support; the fact that security was not visibly increased at Homecoming; and the fact that the graffiti was removed from the door before the police were able to view it.
