Please Ban Sodium Cyanide M-44s and Compound 1080
Please ban sodium cyanide M-44s and Compound 1080 as legal methods to poison native wildlife. These highly toxic materials endanger people, wildlife, and pets. M-44s and Compound 1080 do not always kill their intended targets. As a result, endangered species and pets have been killed, and people have been harmed. These toxicants, even when used according to federal laws, kill indiscriminately. Simply put, they are too dangerous.
Both Compound 1080 and sodium cyanide M-44a are extremely perilous chemical weapons. In two audits, the Office of Inspector General reported an alarming lack of inventory control and unrestricted access to the poisons by unauthorized people. Simply put, Wildlife Services cannot be trusted to handle these agents of death.
Because livestock growers have access to more effective, non-lethal methods such as guard animals, sheds, pens, fences and electronic devices to protect livestock, and because these toxicants pose unreasonable hazards and risks - including biological warfare, they should be banned immediately as predator poisons in the United States.
