A federal judge has asked Interior Secretary Ken Salazar to clarify whether the polar bear should be listed as "endangered" or merely "threatened" under the Endangered Species Act, giving Salazar a chance to protect polar bears from the continued destruction of their habitat.

Listing polar bears as an endangered species would provide them with new, stronger protections under federal law, and with studies showing that as much as two-thirds of the polar bear population could be gone by 2050, time is quickly running out to save this species.

Polar Bears need "endangered" status

Greetings,

With the recent ruling by federal judge Emmet Sullivan asking you to clarify the status of the polar bear under the Endangered Species Act, I'm writing to ask that you add the polar bear to the list of endangered species, instead of its current "threatened" status.

The polar bear is arguably the poster species for environmental deterioration due to climate change, and studies show that as much as two-thirds of the population of polar bears could be gone by 2050 if we don't act now.

It's past time to extend the protections of the Endangered Species Act to polar bears, and Judge Sullivan's action lays a clear path for you to do just that. I hope you'll act decisively and ethically on behalf of polar bears.
