Cole had intended to do the right thing by attempting to take his gun home after seeing he had forgotten it in his truck. Yes the rules state no weapons allowed on school property, however Cole did not intentionally bring his gun on school property . His gun was not loaded and was just forgotten about. Cole should not be punished his whole life, just because he forgot about something and should be able to graduate with his class , in about a month.
