Apologize on air for your transphobic content
Apologize on air for your transphobic content
The Issue
On January 5th, SBT’s show Domingo Legal aired a panel in which a man had to tell, out of a group of 5 women, which of them was not a trans*female. The show’s wording was “to tell which of them isn’t a man”. For 50 minutes, the hosts and two guests go on to verbally abuse and humiliate the women, making lewd comments about their genitalia, touching them, staring at their chests, using slurs and transphobic rhetoric.
The video can be found in two parts on youtube (no subtitles):
Part 1: [x]
Part 2: [x]
One of the men gets uncomfortably close to the women, touching one girl's hair, kissing another on the shoulder, making a third one touch his bare chest. When the girls appear uneasy, the men mock them by yelling out, "tá nervosa! Tá nervosa!" (loose translation: "she's jumpy! She's jumpy!"). The cis woman is referred to as the "real woman" and the "one who can have babies".
The show, which has an average audience of around 7 million people, has yet to issue an apology on the matter. This type of content is viewed as normal by many networks in Brazil, including the one in question, SBT.
This needs to change. We need to let the network and the show-runners know we will not stand for this type of content.
We want an on-air apology from Domingo Legal recognizing that this segment was grossly transphobic and reinforced offensive and dangerous ideas about trans* folk, as well as taking responsibility for broadcasting it to an audience of millions of people and assuring their viewers nothing like this will ever be aired by them again.
