Save Canada's Mighty Mackenzie River
Most Canadians have never seen it. But it is perhaps our nation’s most treasured natural feature...the Mackenzie River.
The entire Mackenzie Valley is now threatened by Canada’s biggest natural gas pipeline project ever. The Mackenzie Gas Project (MGP), likely to cost at least CDN $16 billion, includes three major natural gas production fields north of Inuvik and two underground natural gas pipelines (the longest is 1,220 km) to carry the gas south along the Mackenzie Valley to northern Alberta. Other pipelines would be built connecting other gas fields to the main pipelines.
If it proceeds, this mega-project will trigger the transformation of the Mackenzie Valley from largely intact wilderness to industrial landscape. The environmental impact would be massive.

Most Canadians have never seen it. But it is perhaps our nation’s most treasured natural feature...the mighty Mackenzie River.
Canada’s longest and last truly wild river is threatened by plans to build the biggest natural gas pipeline in Canada ever.
Tell Canada’s Prime Minister Stephen Harper that future generations are counting on him to keep the Mackenzie River Wild!
The Mackenzie River Valley is a truly special place:
No bridge or dam crosses this remote river, and virtually no roads block the free movement of wildlife. Seven Important Bird Areas, including the Kendall Island Bird Sanctuary, provide crucial staging and nesting areas for tens of thousands of waterfowl. Roughly 100 species of migratory birds are present in the Mackenzie River Delta alone, including the last known breeding habitat of the highly endangered Eskimo curlew. More than 5,000 beluga whales calve in the mouth of this great river. The valley is teeming with caribou, moose and grizzly bears. These animals are counting on us for their future. But multinational oil and gas companies have other plans.
A massive proposed pipeline project is planned for the Mackenzie Valley Region just the first step in opening up this unspoiled area to unsustainable mining, clear-cutting, and runaway development.
The project includes three major natural gas production fields north of Inuvik and two underground natural gas pipelines (the longest is 1,220 km) to carry the gas south along the Mackenzie Valley to power northern Alberta's tar sands operations. Other pipelines would be built connecting other gas fields to the main pipelines.
What would a $16 billion mega-project like the Mackenzie Gas Project do to this pristine area?
Fragment habitat for bears, caribou and wolves. Harm fish and fish habitat by increasing sediment deposition into rivers and streams. Permanently damage important breeding or staging areas for millions of geese, tundra swans and other migratory birds. Cause forests to be clear cut and heavy machinery deployed to construct the infrastructure and the new underground pipelines. Accelerate climate change in the Mackenzie Valley.
You can help save the Mackenzie River Valley today! Tell Canada’s Government that you oppose the Mackenzie Gas Project.
