Why This Is Important

There has been a cinema on the Cyprus Road site in Burgess Hill since 1919 and the current cinema was built in 1928 by local builders to an Art Deco design. Cinemas of this period are rare as are independent cinemas which have lost out to large multiplexes.

There are strong rumours that Mid Sussex District Council want to sell the Cyprus Road car park for retail development and interest has been expressed by Sainsbury to build a superstore. If this happens there is a risk that the cinema will have to be demolished to make way for the superstore and its road infrastructure. This would result in the loss of a much loved Burgess Hill landmark and also a leisure facility that provides affordable entertainment to many people.

It is not only important to keep cinema alive in Burgess Hill but also to protect our town's history and heritage which is why (regardles of our views on developing the Cyprus Road car park) we do not want to see The Orion demolished.

Save The Orion Cinema, Burgess Hill

Dear Councillors,

I understand the Mid Sussex District Council is considering selling the Cyprus Road car park for retail development and that Sainsbury may be interested in the site. I am concerned that if development was to go ahead (either by Sainsbury or any other major retailer) that it would mean that The Orion Cinema would be demolished to accommodate it and the necessary road infrastructure.

There has been a cinema in Cyprus Road since 1919 and the current cinema was constructed in 1928, by local builders, to an Art Deco design. I am sure you are aware that cinemas of this age and design are rare. The Orion is, therefore, an important part of Burgess Hill's history and heritage. It has great character and it should be protected and maintained.

The Orion provides good quality entertainment and is far more affordable than the big multiplexes in Crawley or Brighton.

It holds good memories for me and many other people in the town and surrounding area.

I am therefore asking you to give a commitment that cinema will be kept alive in Burgess Hill and that The Orion's future is safe.

Yours faithfully
