Save Monk Seals

The Issue

Hawaiian monk seals are the only pinniped species (seal, sea lion, or walrus) that is found exclusively in the United States.  The monk seal faces impending extinction (within 50 years) as a result of habitat infringement, entanglements, contaminants, food limitation, and other threats.  In addition to contributing to biodiversity, monk seals are a top marine predator and play a vital role in the ocean ecosystem; their loss would likely have ecosystem-wide repercussions.  The Hawaiian monk seal can be saved if resources are devoted to better understanding and mitigating the threats they face.  Yet the budget for saving this species was cut by approximately 35% in 2011, undermining current successful mitigation efforts.

Tell congress that you support efforts to save Monk seals from extinction and that you care what happens to the Hawaiian Monk Seal.
