The Cadiz City Council intends to exterminate cats in Campo del Sur. This area has become a dumping place over the years, where people not only dispose of their garbage, but also abandon their cats. As a result of that lack of responsibility, these cats are living in deplorable conditions.

Now it appears as if the mayor of Cadiz wants to eliminate the cat colonies in Campo del Sur.

Extermination of cats in Cadiz

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to express my utter indignation and revulsion at the killing of cat colonies in Campo del Sur that might allegedly be undertaken by the Cadiz local authorities.

This affected area has ended up being used as a dunghill, causing disrespectful and uncivil attitudes in many citizens, who, besides waste, also dispose of their cats. As a result of this unfortunate and irresponsible attitude, thousands of cats barely survive the day, being victims of starvation and weather conditions. Obviously, it is indisputable that this situation cannot continue. The Cadiz authorities have decided to clean up Campo del Sur, but what does this imply for the cats in this area ? An extermination of the cat colonies should not be an option. The taxpayers' money should be spent looking forward rather than backward, through awareness and sterilization campaigns, rather than invested in murder.

It is clear that the commemoration of the bicentennial of the Constitution in 2012 has facilitated or accelerated the killing. This beautiful city wants to become the banner of culture, equality and fraternity among nations. However, how can a city so cruel and insensitive to animals become the pinnacle of culture ? With measures such as extermination, what kind of message of achievement and respect will you be transmitting ? This needless cruelty would only send out a message that Cadiz has no respect for life.

The Cadiz cats have a unique history with the city. They are an undisputed symbol of the city and have served as inspiration for many writers, poets and musicians. They should be cared for and respected, rather than be punished with neglect, abuse and death. The nation depends largely on tourism. To exterminate these cats will only damage the Cadiz tourism, not only because Cadiz will lose its precious symbol, but also because people will not want to visit a city that resorts to mass murder as a solution to an animal overpopulation problem. A slaughter of the cats in Cadiz will only contribute to the negative image of Spain regarding lack of consideration for animal welfare.

Today, hundreds of modern cities around the world, including Paris, San Francisco, San Diego and Los Angeles, have resolved this same situation in a humane manner by raising awareness, promoting adoption, and implementing schemes for sterilization. These methods have been effective for controlling cat colonies.

I strongly oppose the way things are being handled in Cadiz. The city of Cadiz should take the lead and launch a plan to improve the situation of the feral cats. The authorities need to cooperate with protective and voluntary associations to allocate the economic resources for an effective and humane control of the cat population.

Thank you for your attention.

Sincerely,

[Your name]
