Save Princeton Battlefield
Save Princeton Battlefield
The Issue
The site of George Washington's victory in the Revolutionary War Battle of Princeton is threatened. The Institute for Advanced Study proposes to build faculty housing on the land where a pivotal portion of the battle which saved the Revolution was fought. This land has remained intact and undeveloped since the time of the Battle in January, 1777, and it should remain as it was for the education and inspiration of the American people.
Princeton Battlefield is a National HIstoric Landmark, and designated as a Priority One threatened site by the American Battlefield Protection Program (ABPP) of the National Park Service. It is also one of Preservation NJ's 10 Most Endangered Historic Places. Research undertaken by the Institute and a Military Terrain Analysis and Battle Mapping study commissioned by the Princeton Battlefield Society with funding from the ABPP both have established that the successful counterattack which gave Washington his first victory over regular British Army units occurred on the land proposed for faculty housing. This culminating victory in the campaign that began with the Crossing of the Delaware liberated NJ, the Crossroads of the American Revolution, and reinvigorated the revolution. Without this victory, Washington's forces would have dwindled away, and the cause would have been lost.
We must act now to save this historic open space. Plans have been filed by the Institute with the Regional Planning Board of Princeton - we need your help to preserve this hallowed land for future generations of Americans.
