Every year, over 8 million abandoned pets end up at US shelters. Of this 8 million, 3 million find new homes, while nearly 5 million are euthanized. Approximately 55% of dogs and puppies entering shelters are killed, based on reports from more than 1.000 American facilities.

This figure lets us imagine how many pets are born every year: From a couple of cats giving birth to 2 litters a year, and their offspring, figures are handled around 11.000 cats in only 9 years. In the case of dogs, we can talk about around 67,000 births from a unique litter in 9 years. These figures show the need of a responsible spay and neuter to prevent the death of more animals.

Back again to pets collected by shelters: Only 15% of dogs and 2% of cats are reunited with their owners. 25% of dogs and 24% of cats are adopted. The rest - often more than 55%- are killed.
