Save Crestmoor Elementary School!

The Issue

Closing Crestmoor Elementary School will…

  • Cause additional trauma to the kids who are still recovering from the PG&E blast,
  • Cause additional stress on families who rely on walking or biking as the primary method of transportation,
  • Cause children to have to navigate across dangerous intersections.
  • Cause property values to possibly drop even farther below market value post PG&E blast,
  • Cause the neighborhood to no longer be as attractive to potential families,
  • Cause the campus to become a prime location for illegal activity.

Keeping Crestmoor Elementary School open will…

  • Provide continuity to Crestmoor children,
  • Put less stress on the children who would have to walk an exceedingly long distance,
  • Give parents a sense of peace as many now have two working parents or a single working parent working very long hours and are not able to drive their kids to school,
  • Continue to attract new families to the school district; family with two children equals 18 combined years of enrollment for the district,
  • Attract new families into the neighborhood, possibly purchasing homes, potentially increasing property values as well as stimulating the local community.

Crestmoor has an excellent educational rating that keeps getting better with the California state Academic Performance Index growing from 859 of 1000 in 2010 to 875 in 2011, the highest scores in the district.

Crestmoor is inclusive, it is attended by local Crestmoor-Glenview neighborhood students and students from all neighborhoods throughout the city as well as outside the city whose parents specifically choose Crestmoor because of its long history of high academic achievement and strong culture of community involvement.

Crestmoor Elementary is an asset for the San Bruno Park School District and the City of San Bruno and most importantly to our children, the future leaders of San Bruno.

I can only say that I feel the stress and anxiety of the residents, especially the school families who must endure the uncertain future. Let me just state what I have stated before - I am against the closure of any school, especially at what appears as an early stage in this ongoing financial crisis. I believe there still remains other options to investigate. I will stay close and informed to this issue and support those efforts to keep all schools open.

Dear Sarita Fordham Aguilar, I appreciate your email and your concerns regarding the closure of Crestmoor Elementary. However, the San Bruno City Council has no authority over schools or their closures, that is up to the San Bruno Elementary School Board .We are separate governing bodies with separate responsibilities. I am sure the School Board members are interested in your thoughts regarding the proposed closure. I suggest you attend a school board meeting and make your position known. Good luck with your endeavors. Sincerely, Irene O'Connell Councilmember

Thank you for writing. I will take your comments and the many others into consideration. First, the closing of any school is a serious matter that impacts students, families and community. We, San Bruno Park School Board Members, know this. Secondly, we are trying to find solutions to a dire financial situation. This District is spending more money than it receives to operate our eight schools. We have increased class size, we have trimmed staff, we have modified or reduced programs, and yet we are still deficit spending and the State promised more cuts to our budget. What to do? Please keep involved. We need your help. There is a planned School Board Meeting this week on Wednesday 4/25 @ 7p at Crestmoor School. Sincerely, James Prescott, Trustee
