The University of California Santa Cruz is the only school in the UC system that does not offer an Ethnic Studies program – and it recently moved to suspend the closest substitute, American Studies. This program, along with Community Studies, are the only two majors to be cut from the campus in the past decade. Citing budget cuts, UCSC is the next in a growing list of campuses that are allowing invaluable programs for underrepresented communities to be the first to go in the economic crisis.
