Romania's strays, its image and the EU/EC's mission statement. Does anyone care?

According to the EC’s mission statement “animals are sentient beings” and its “general aim is to ensure that animals do not endure avoidable pain or suffering, and obliges the owner/keeper of animals to respect minimum welfare requirements” However some member countries, reference is being made to Romania in particular, animal protection laws are not being observed, hence the EC mission statement becomes void and meaningless.

The world community of animal lovers is deeply disappointed when it comes to the plight of the strays in Romania. The dumping on garbage sites, culling, shooting, stoning, maiming and killing of strays in Romania is an abomination and even more disgusting coming from a country in the heart of Europe. If they are not abused as mentioned above, the animals are crammed into so called shelters where they eat each other due to hunger and where they are ultimately murdered by/with the knowledge of the “authorities”. Ironically millions of Euros are being spent on “killing” rather than on spaying/neutering and returning programmes.

It is hard to believe, judging by the facts at hand, that Romania – a European country – cares less about its image or about the EC mission statement for that matter. Also it totally ignores all petitions, letters and emails sent to its authorities signed by thousands of people worldwide.  

We strongly demand that animal protection laws be in place and strictly observed by all EU member countries and the appalling situation of strays in Romania be addressed with utmost urgency. And we demand an end to the continuous massacre of the innocent s in Romania with immediate effect.

From the “cradle of civilization” Europe has become the “cradle of death’ for millions of strays in countries like Romania.  Romania has lost its moral standing in the world and calls are being considered to boycott its tourism industry and its products till the immoral and utmost cruelties towards strays continue with impunity in  the sight of the EU, EC and the world!.
